What does GEO stand for?
Generative engine optimisation: making a business easy for generative AI systems to understand, trust and recommend. The generative engines are the assistants that write an answer in sentences, so Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot. You will also see the same work called AI search optimisation, answer engine optimisation or AEO, and in American English generative engine optimization. Searches split between the two spellings, which is why both appear on this page.
Whatever the label, the aim is the same: when a customer asks for a Halifax business like yours, yours is one of the names in the reply.
How is GEO different from SEO?
The foundations are shared and the finish is different. SEO gets your pages ranked for searches such as commercial flooring contractor or gas engineer Huddersfield. An assistant answering the same need runs those searches itself, reads the top results, checks them against reviews, directories and other mentions, and then writes a short recommendation with a reason attached. So ranking still matters, because it decides what the assistant reads. On top of that, three things carry more weight than they do in classic SEO: plain, specific, quotable statements of fact; evidence such as named projects, photographs and reviews; and corroboration from sites you do not own.
A page written for a keyword can rank and still be useless to a model. A page that answers the customer’s question in its first sentence does both jobs.
What does GEO build on?
Nine things, and none of them is new to anyone who has done SEO properly. Entity signals means the same name, address, phone number, services and description everywhere you appear, so a model can be sure the Halifax firm on the directory and the one on the website are the same business. Structured information means schema markup that spells out the business, its area and its questions and answers in a form a machine reads without guessing. The rest are exactly what they sound like.
- Strong SEO
- Entity signals
- Clear services, one page each
- Expert content that answers real questions
- Reviews with names and specifics in them
- Written case studies
- Third-party mentions, from trade bodies to local press
- Structured information
- Real business evidence: photographs, film, results with a number on them
Is there a trick that gets a business into AI answers faster?
No, and be careful of anyone selling one. Some of what circulates is harmless and pointless, such as hidden text written for robots or a page stuffed with the phrase best in Halifax. Some of it is harmful: fake reviews, invented awards, directories that exist only to sell listings. The assistants are built to check claims against other sources, so an unsupported claim on your own site is ignored at best. What does work is slower and duller, and it is the list above.
What can be influenced, and what cannot?
You can influence everything the systems read and nothing about how they read it on a given day. Within reach: what your site says and how clearly, how consistent your details are across the web, how many genuine reviews you have and what they mention, whether your jobs are written up and photographed, and whether other sites talk about you. Out of reach: which assistant a customer opens, how they word the question, personalisation from their own history, and the fact that a generated answer can vary from one session to the next. That is why we measure how often you appear across a set of questions and platforms, and why no honest firm promises a mention.
Does a Halifax business need GEO now?
If customers in your trade are already asking assistants for recommendations, yes, and for most trades they are. The cost of starting is low when the SEO is sound, because most of the work is making existing pages, reviews and evidence clearer and more consistent. Bond Brickwork in Brighouse and Dolphin Heating in Huddersfield are both named in AI answers on the back of search work that was already good, and this site is built the same way, so the method is on show in the page you are reading.
